CHESHIRE & MANCHESTER SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE – DIVISION TWO
SUN 18 OCT 20, 11:00
The first stage of the game was reasonably end to end, with neither team dominating possession and equally no clear chances. The first chance of note came in the seventh minute, with Nathan Sharples squaring up the centre back before finding a yard and striking at goal. The Maccabi keeper got up well to his right hand side to get a finger tip on the ball and push it onto the post.
Davyhulme Park had the ball in the net in the tenth minute, as Leigh Burke followed up a shot and closed down the keeper as he fumbled the ball. He recovered the ball, and put it into the net but the referee blew his whistle deeming that the keeper had full control when challenged.
A pattern to the game had begun to develop with Davyhulme creating a number of chances, maintaining possession and winning the ball back deep into Maccabi’s half. The next chance came from a set piece, Leigh Burke swung a corner into the box with the Davyhulme captain leaping highest but heading over.
The fourteenth minute and the ball was in the Maccabi net for a second time but this time it counts. Jack Irlam drifts into space on the right side of midfield, before playing the diagonal to switch the play. Ryan Hanlan brings the ball down, turns, finds a yard before slotting the ball under the keeper. A Maccabi defender gets a foot to it, but there’s too much power on the shot to prevent the goal (0-1).
Maccabi nearly level the game a minute later. The left winger tucked inside, found space on the edge and unleashed a powerful shot which left Taylor planted and a spectator. It crashed off the upright and back out into play.
The home side once again had a number of chances to level the scores, as Maccabi string together a series of shots from the edge of the area. All of which are blocked well by the Davyhulme defence, Edwards shielded the attacker out of the box before tripping him and conceding the foul. Maccabi failed to capitalise though, hitting it straight at Taylor who held the ball well.
A big chance squandered in the 21st minute. Ryan Burke slides the ball through the middle for brother, Leigh Burke, putting him through one-on-one. He rounded the keeper, but got the ball stuck under his feet allowing the defender to recover well and prevent what seemed like a certain goal.
